LEGEND

Grading  - No two trees are exactly the same.  For this reason the industry, through its association HPVA  (Hardwood  Plywood and Veneer Association) , has developed a system of grades to describe the appearance and performance characteristics of hardwood plywood. Grading is a position in a scale of qualities.  The price of a hardwood plywood panel is based, to a considerable degree, upon the quality and species of the face. The higher the quality and more costly the face veneer, the higher  the price.

CORE TYPES

Core- The innerpart of plywood between face and back veneers.  Lumber strips, particleboard, MDF, and veneer core are the different types.

Crossbanding  The veneer layers which grain runs perpendicular to that of the face veneer

vc  Veneer core,  A core type consisting of layers of veneer alternately cross laminated at 90 degrees.

pbc  Particleboard  ( flake)  A panel or core product composed of small particles of wood and wood fibers that are bonded together with synthetic resin adhesives in the presence of heat and pressure.  

mdf   Medium Density Fiberboard (fiber)  A panel or core product manufactured from wood fibers  combined with a synthetic resin or other bonding system. MDF is manufactured by the application of heat and pressure by a process in which the fiber bond is substantially created by the added adhesive system.

blc   Basswood lumbercore,  A core type consisting of basswood lumber strips, containing no voids. A veneer crossbanding  and glue  holding the strips together.

frtvc  Fire rated veneer core.  A core material  consisting of layers of veneer that have been treated to slow down a flame spread, with veneers alternately cross laminated at 90 degrees.

frtpbc  Fire rated particleboard.  Duraflake FR is a class 1 rated fire retardant particleboard, suitable for a  variety of industrial and  commercial building applications were stringent  building  codes and public safety requirements are a factor.

FLEXIBLE TYPES

pb  veneer -paperback veneer , A flexible veneer available in a wide variety of species, affixed to a craft paper by means of  glue, heat, and pressure.

10 mil.   a .10 mm craftpaper back laminated to a hardwood face veneer under heat and pressure.

20 mil.   A .20 mm craftpaper laminated to a hardwood face veneer under heat and pressure.

NBL -A 2-ply flexible veneer with a whole piece backer of similar grain and color.  NBL  eliminates bubbling, solvent seepage, and core telegraphing. In stock  in a wide variety of species .

METHODS OF CUTTING VENEER

ps- plain sliced , flat cut- Veneer sliced parallel to the pith of the log and approximately tangent to the growth rings to achieve flat cut veneer. Plain sliced veneer is cut using either  a horizontal or vertical slicing machine or by the half round method using a rotary lathe.

rc - rotary cut- Veneer produced by centering the log in a lathe and turning it against a broad cutting knife which is set into the log at a slight angle.

qtd.  quartered -  A straight grain appearance achieved through the process of quarter slicing or through the use of veneer cut in any fashion that produces a straight grain effect.  Cut is radial to the pith to the extent  that ray fleck is produced and the amount of fleck  is not limited.

rift - A straight grain appearance achieved through the process  of cutting at a slight angle to the radial on the half round stay log or through the use of veneer cut in any fashion that produces a straight grain with minimal ray fleck.

SM#   sequence matched and numbered face veneer panels.  A method of arranging veneer  faces such that each   face is in order relative  to its original position in the tree and therefore, contains features of grain and figures similar to adjacent faces.  Three or more such related faces are required to constitute a sequence .            

Book Match- Adjacent pieces of veneer from a flitch or log are opened like a book and spliced to make up the face with matching occurring at the spliced joints.  The  fibers of the wood, slanting in opposite directions in the adjacent sheets, create a characteristic light  and dark effect when the surface is seen from an angle.

Slipmatched- A sheet from a flitch is slid across the sheet beneath and, without turning, spliced at the joints.

WPF - whole piece face -   A rotary cut face veneer containing no joints, and or seams.  No matching required.

counterfront -  the grain direction of the hardwood face veneer running in the short direction of the panel. Used in wainscoting.

Figure The pattern produced in a wood surface by irregular coloration and by annual growth rings. Developing an attractive, distinctive pattern adjacent  to the grain direction. Very sought after in particular species. Types of  figure include curly, fiddleback, swirly, crotch, pommele, quilted, block mottled and flek type.

Grain- The direction, size, arrangement, and appearance of the fibers in wood and/or veneer.

crotch - type of veneer  figuring originating from the intersection of the limb or branch with the main trunk of the tree. Producing exceptional figure refereed to as “feather”.

Burls- are responsible for the formation of a number of interesting natural designs. A burl is an abnormal, wartlike excrescence on the trunk, stump, or branches of a tree. Because of this many bizarre figures are derived from veneers cut from burls.  Burl veneer has high decorative value for inlays and overlays and for matching into four, eight, or more piece combinations. The Italians are the masters of cutting and matching burls

colorfin form-  A very strong multi-ply birch panel that is impregnated with phenolic resin, which gives it a smooth surface.  Originally used for concrete form work.  Now being specified by architects and designers for furniture, built ins, and custom commercial applications. A multi ply birch panel  (3/4   14 ply, 1/2    10 ply)  96 x  48,  an S face with a BB back on an all birch core and is manufactured  in Finland.

multi-ply- A  strong European birch panel  consisting of select cross banded birch veneers bonded together under heat, pressure, and a water proof, boil proof adhesive.  Multi-ply birch gives the look of  a decorative edge with layers of 1.4 mm  crossbands giving a 24mm piece seventeen ply’s.

marine grade - Plywood panels manufactured with the same glueline durability requirements as other exterior type panels but with more restrictive veneer quality requirements. the grade is particularly suitable for marine applications where bending is required, as in boat hulls. The face and the innerplies have to be of the same species for the expansion and contraction rates will be equal,   Allowing for a uniform bond.  Plywood panels produced by Shelman-Swiss Hellenic also contain an anti-pesticide for full Lloyds  offshore and small craft certification.

pre-finished plywood- A clear topcoat produced through a flat line finishing process.  This process uses a precision differential roller to apply four sealer coats and an ultraviolet cured topcoat consisting of an acrylate that is 100% solids.

Melamine- a resin impregnated decorative paper thermally fused to a substrate, usually particleboard. Panolam brand melamine is highly resistant to stains, scratches, abrasions, chip out, steam and radiant heat. Panolam offers a wide variety of colors, patterns, and wood grains at a fraction of the cost of high pressure laminate. Panolam brand melamine is stocked in thickness from 1/4 to 1 1/8.
